Unconventional application of Image Correlation techniques on Biomaterials and cardiovascular applications
2022
Image Correlation techniques are increasing in popularity and are now suitable to investigate complex structural and fluid-dynamics of cardiovascular systems. These approaches operate through a digital correlation of a pair of images to determine physical quantities of complex systems. In this thesis, their application to the mechanical characterisation of complex biomaterials (Nitinol and soft materials), and the characterisation of complex biofluid-dynamics was investigated, with the aim to analyse their reliability and enhance their accuracy and field of application. Digital Image Correlation, supported by Infrared Thermography, was used to achieve a more in depth understanding of the me…

A 3D Cohesive interface for the delamination analysis of a stiff film on a soft elastic substrate and the wrinkling/buckling deformation modes
2018
The paper proposes a finite element systematic study of a mechanical system composed by a soft elastic substrate, subjected to a uniform state of compression, covered by a stiff thin film. This kind of problem is rather common for coating systems where layered materials with severe mismatch of elastic and thermal properties are largely employed. The specific mechanical problem stands on the concomitant competition between elastic wrinkling surface deformation and the nonlinear delamination that can develop at the interface between the thin film and the substrate. Both mechanical phenomena have their source in the nonlinear elastic buckling of the thin stiff film, which can be viewed as a th…
LARGE DEFORMATION CREEP BEHAVIOR OF A SOLID POLYMER.
1981
Abstract The effect of loading rate and strain on the creep behavior after sample yielding has been studied in previous communications (14–15) for Mylar in tension and for Lexan in compression. In this work the creep behavior of Lexan samples previously elongated is considered both in tension and in compression. A procedure which collects all the data independently of both loading rate and initial creep strain is proposed.
Modelling landslides in unsaturated slopes subjected to rainfall infiltration using material point method
2016
This paper presents a dynamic fully coupled formulation for saturated and unsaturated soils that undergo large deformations based on material point method. Governing equations are applied to porous material while considering it as a continuum in which the pores of the solid skeleton are filled with water and air. The accuracy of the developed method is tested with available experimental and numerical results. The developed method has been applied to investigate the failure and post-failure behaviour of rapid landslides in unsaturated slopes subjected to rainfall infiltration using two different bedrock geometries that lie below the top soil. The models show different failure and post-failur…
